18th Century Georgian Building

An impressive view at the east end of Great Pulteney St. This splendid building now houses the Holburne Museum. It was built in 1796 as Sydney House at the entrance to Sydney Gardens, which like Sydney the State capital of New South Wales in Australia, was named after Viscount Sydney. The gardens were laid out for the al fresco entertainment of the Georgians and were frequented by Jane Austen whose home was a few yards from the gardens.
